While the contribution of solar energy to global electricity production remains generally low at 3.6%, it has firmly established itself among other renewable energy technologies, comprising nearly 31% of the total installed renewable energy capacity in 2022 (IRENA, 2023).
The utilization of renewable energy as a future energy resource is drawing significant attention worldwide. The contribution of solar energy (including concentrating solar power (CSP) and solar photovoltaic (PV) power) to global electricity production, as one form of renewable energy sources, is generally still low, at 3.6%.
Through a detailed and systematic literature survey, the present review study summarizes the world solar energy status, including concentrating solar power and solar PV power, along with published solar energy potential assessment articles for 235 countries and territories as the first step toward developing solar energy in these regions.
Yet in that short time, solar power has revealed the Sun’s limitless potential to power an increasingly technological society. Since the 1950s, NASA has harnessed the energy of the Sun to power spacecraft and drive scientific discovery across our solar system. Today, NASA continues to advance solar panel technology and test new innovations.
In 1893, the photovoltaic (PV) effect was discovered; after many decades, scientists developed this technology for electricity generation . Based on that, after many years of research and development from scientists worldwide, solar energy technology is classified into two key applications: solar thermal and solar PV.
Installation capacity of solar energy worldwide . Energy can be obtained directly from the Sun—so-called solar energy. Globally, there has been growth in solar energy applications, as it can be used to generate electricity, desalinate water and generate heat, etc.
The sun—that power plant in the sky—bathes Earth in ample energy to fulfill all the world''s power needs many times over. It doesn''t give off carbon dioxide emissions.
