In this perspective, we present an overview of the research and development of advanced battery materials made in China, covering Li-ion batteries, Na-ion batteries, solid-state batteries and some promising types of Li-S, Li-O 2, Li-CO 2 batteries, all of which have been achieved remarkable progress.
HENDRIX: Last year, China refined, you know, 95% of manganese, roughly 70% of cobalt and graphite, two-thirds of lithium, and over 60% of nickel. These are all the key materials for lithium-ion batteries that currently dominate the market. NORTHAM: China is not geologically blessed with every material you could want for the energy transition.
China is a leader in the battery supply chain due to its control of a significant portion of the raw material refining, cell capacity, and component manufacturing. According to BloombergNEF’s first lithium-ion battery supply chain ranking, China controlled 80% of the raw material refining, 77% of the cell capacity, and 60% of the component manufacturing worldwide in 2020.
Lithium technologies are expected to advance quickly over the next few years. However, companies in China and beyond are frantically pursuing alternative batteries not centred around lithium, in part because the minerals needed to make the current options come from just a few countries.
There are nearly 30 Na-ion battery manufacturing plants currently operating, planned or under construction, for a combined capacity of over 100 GWh, almost all in China. For comparison, the current manufacturing capacity of Li-ion batteries is around 1 500 GWh.
