These include performance and durability requirements for industrial batteries, electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and light means of transport (LMT) batteries; safety standards for stationary battery energy storage systems (SBESS); and information requirements on SOH and expected lifetime.
New requirements The regulation introduces several new requirements affecting various battery categories, including carbon footprint declarations, performance and durability standards, recycled content declarations, safety measures, and labelling requirements.
All parts are not applicable for all batteries. Instead, the regulation defines five battery categories depending on how the battery is used. Some requirements are only applicable for some battery categories. Requirements associated with a new CE conformity assessment of batteries are introduced in the Regulation.
Performance and Durability Requirements (Article 10) Article 10 of the regulation mandates that from 18 August 2024, rechargeable industrial batteries with a capacity exceeding 2 kWh, LMT batteries, and EV batteries must be accompanied by detailed technical documentation.
Some requirements are only applicable for some battery categories. Requirements associated with a new CE conformity assessment of batteries are introduced in the Regulation. This means that all batteries, regardless of whether they are used in a product or supplied separately, need to be CE marked according to this regulation.
The IEC publishes a wide range of international standards to support EV technologies to ensure they operate and connect safely to the electricity grid. Combined with the IEC Conformity Assessment Systems, they contribute towards ensuring interoperability and the safe functioning of all components, including the batteries.
