AES Hawaiʻi's Waikoloa Solar + Storage Project began commercial operations in April 2023 and is the largest project of its kind on Hawai‘i Island. The project’s energy storage system is improving the reliability of the island’s power grid while providing low-cost clean energy to customers when they need it.
A storage battery project has not yet proven its effectiveness at scale, according to Bob Rudd, the chief commercial officer at Plus Power. The battery's capacity will help address the issue of clean energy curtailment, also known as over-generation, for Hawaiian Electric, Rudd said.
The KES battery plant in Kapolei, Hawaiʻi, could save 69% of solar energy that would otherwise be destroyed in its first five years of operation, according to Hawaiian Electric’s modeling.
The Kapolei Energy Storage project is a utility-scale battery farm with a storage capacity of 565 megawatt-hours of electricity, making it the largest storage project in Hawaiʻi. It officially went online before the holidays after several delays.
The new power plant in Kapolei, Hawaiʻi, will help Hawaiian Electric deal with the problem of clean energy curtailment, also known as over-generation, Rudd said. When Oʻahu produces too much power with no way to store it, some of it has to be 'curtailed'.
The Kapolei Energy Storage facility in Hawaiʻi is the largest storage project in the state, with a storage capacity of 565 megawatt-hours of electricity. It is under construction in 2022. The project's developer, San Fransisco-based Plus Power, believes it is the first time a battery has been used by a major utility to balance the grid.
